Book Review: The No Cry Nap Solution by Elizabeth Pantley

If you struggle with nap time for your baby or toddler, this is the book for you. I give it five out of five stars. Elizabeth Pantley is a hero at my house because of her first book, The No Cry Sleep Solution.

I have never been a fan of the cry it out method. I always felt there was a better way. When I first became a mom, I read about attachment parenting from Dr. William Sears and his wife Martha in their book The Baby Book. That book became my Bible for parenting. I vowed after reading it that I would not let my child cry it out. But by the time I had my fourth baby, I knew there must be a way to get my baby to sleep without always nursing the baby to sleep and without letting the baby cry it out. There had to be a happy medium that eased the baby to sleep without wearing out mom’s nerves, heartstrings, or eardrums. Not that I don’t like nursing my babies, I love to, but it gets hard when your baby keeps waking up after 5 to 10 minute stretches over and over and wants to nurse back to sleep. Enter the No Cry Sleep Solution which I love. I implemented it with my fourth baby and since then nighttime sleep has been better with that baby and subsequent babies. I feel rested and my babies are rested.

The No Cry Nap Solution is an even better book. Elizabeth has even more information on how babies and toddler’s sleep patterns affect their health and behavior. She teaches you about the volcano effect, which is that the longer the baby/young child goes through the day without a nap, the more likely she is to erupt into tears or bad behavior. She explains what realistic amounts of sleep are that you should expect for your baby/child according to his age, the different stages of sleep, and why short catnaps aren’t good enough.

This book has the answer to all of your baby/toddler/preschooler nap problems: too short of naps, nap resisters, naps only with pacifier/in the car/in the swing/ or in mom’s arms. But remember, Elizabeth’s program only works if you do. You will actually have to implement the steps to make it work, but it will work for you. Elizabeth is very helpful, last time I checked she was willing to answer questions by email.
