The Family Builder Premiere Night Was a Success!

I know I’ve posted this picture before but I like it so much I am posting it again, even though it looks like “Sister Wives.” It’s me and my dh with my sister at her baby’s blessing. And she does a different husband, he’s just not in the picture.

Last night my husband and I hosted the first meeting of the Leadership Education Family Builder class. It was so exciting! We had a super turnout.I forgot to take a picture. It’s hard to remember everything when I’m running the show.

I know you might be thinking, I don’t need that class, I already know everything there is to know about homeschooling, or you might be thinking, I can’t afford it.

The class is great for new homeschoolers and veterans. It’s also great for public schoolers. The only excuse you have for not taking the class is if you have never taken it before AND did all the work AND are staying faithful to your plans. If not, then come join us! So Do You Want to Write a Book?: Leslie Householder Profitable Author Secrets

One of the tender mercies in my life lately was that Leslie Householder scheduled another Profitable Author seminar. If you don’t know who Leslie is go to http://prosperyourfamily.com. She did one the very Saturday I held my youth conference last May so I couldn’t go. I am so grateful that she decided to do another one last Saturday. It was cheaper, because it was a commercial in disguise to upgrade to her personal coaching to get ALL the secrets.  But in a way this one was even better because she invited other authors who do different genres than what she does to share their secrets. Leslie does self-help, and she had people there to cover writing for business sales,  fiction, multimedia, and children’s books.

My nursing toddler is finally to the point that I can be gone all day and he is OK with separating from me. I’ve been through seasons where I take my attached baby with me, and now I am in the season where I can leave all kids at home. It’s a seasonal journey.

Another tender mercy was that the seminar only lasted half a day, and so that meant I could buzz on over to Paradigm High to watch my son compete in his Freedom Bowl, which he won. More Pics coming soon.

I missed however, another attraction going on this day, the Eagle Forum Convention, which I always love going to  I have been able to hear from great warriors for freedom at this conference like Scott Bradley, Phyllis Schlafly, and David Barton. So I missed that one but I just got an email saying someone has made DVDs of it so I will catch it there. My mom also went and took notes I hope so I will ask her for them. 

At the seminar with Leslie, first we heard from  Bridget Cook. Bridget wrote Skinhead Confessions, about TJ Leyden, a gang member who walked away from gangs with a price tag on his head, and another compelling book that I will read in my postmenopausal state called Shattered Silence. That one is about a girl who finds out her father is a serial killer. Yikes! Not something I want to read until I am done having babies and not prone to dwelling on harrowing images in my tender progesteronegenic state. Both are true stories. Bridget woke up at 2 AM just after a dream that gave her the plot line for the first story. She started writing page after page in the wee hours. Then later while doing research she discovered a blog by TJ that mirrored point by point what she had dreamed. She dreamt a story that was real! She ended up getting to write the story! She was a an exciting passionate speaker so her writing is probably the same. I really enjoyed her sharing that people can change, forgive, and find redemption. She got to be on Oprah to promote at least one of the books.

Next was Leslie. She announced that her self-published bestselling book Jackrabbit Factor, which you can get free here http://jackrabbitfactor.com, is now published by a traditional publisher in Taiwan and China too. She self published in the U.S. because no one would publish it. She has one rejection letter “bronzed” in her smartphone to remind her that people who reject her can be wrong. The letter was laughable.

She shared that to get a bestselling book, you can sell less than 500 books. She also said that bestselling books aren’t necessarily good books. They are just books that have been heavily promoted. You can do the same with yours, but don’t think you are going to make a million dollars by writing a bestseller. It usually has to lead into something else you sell for you to really make a lot of money.  She used Lightning Source to publish her books. I am not going to share all the secrets, you will just have to go the seminar yourself. Keeping Wonder

Today is a day that makes me remember why I don’t want to live in northern Utah for the rest of my life. Winter can be very bleak here. I have been rejoicing that the past two weeks have been so bright and sunny. It made the exit from Christmas so much easier. The shining sun and snow-less days almost felt like summer. (Not spring, because Utah springs tend to be just more winter, at least lately.) But today is snowy and gray.

We have been making snowflakes for our homeschooling and reading Snowflake Bentley. As I pondered this picture book classic I thought of the idea I had presented in Family Home Evening on Monday night. We talked about the article in the January 2012 Ensign about God’s plan for each of us, and how that relates to the Book of Mormon. http://lds.org/ensign/2012/01/the-book-of-mormon-and-gods-plan-for-us?lang=eng God has an overarching plan, the plan of salvation, and then within the plan He has a plan for our daily lives, in terms of what to do with the scriptures, the Sabbath day, caring for the poor, what to eat, whether to live as an individual or as a family, and more. Then He has a plan for each of us that fits within those two plans. And on it goes. The Ensign article points out that the Book of Mormon has scriptures with a plan for each of those things.

Then to conclude the lesson I presented this video from Mormon Messages (if I find it I will post) about how important it is to look around you always to notice the beauty, and and not take it for granted. In other words, to live in thanksgiving daily as you live all of your plans (and have them disrupted by toddlers, money problems, natural disasters, etc.)

Wilson Bentley was a farmer in Vermont who did just that. He noticed the beauty in each snowflake and was the first to take actual photos of snowflakes. Here’s his story. We watched some other videos about him. (As a side note I will add that I think it’s so cool that his mother homeschooled him until his teen years. Would he have turned out differently if he had been forced to sit at school all day in his younger years?)

So that make me wonder, what is the beauty all around me for me to notice, even when I am going through hard painful times? Why does Heavenly Father put such beauty into snowflakes when they for the most part go unnoticed and melt away? What does that teach me about His plan? Is there far more beauty in this life than I even know?

Just watching these snowflakes below makes my heart ache with pleasure. God gives these snow crystals to us every winter. It’s so cool to see how within many of the snowflakes you see little snowflakes, and then smaller ones would appear on those if you could get closer. Those are tessellations. Tessellations are God’s way of telling us that there are lots of little plans for our lives within His big beautiful plan of salvation. It reminds me of trees too and family history. Within every tree there are little tree networks, and then even smaller networks in those. Same with families.  God reveals his beauty and love in repetition and order, but then there are little surprises when you look closer.

I will sum the article up here. It’s about how an LDS tour guide to Machu Picchu in Peru has noticed that some people come on tours to the place thinking they know all about the lost city of the Incas. People can get that way with the gospel. He points out that scientists continue to discover new things about Machu Picchu. And there’s always more to discover about your life.  If you are feeling bored or apathetic, especially about life in general or the gospel of Jesus Christ, it’s time to rekindle the wonder in your life.

How do you do that? The articles tells us:

!. Know that there is always something more God wants you to know and that you need to know to be happier.

2. Know that in order to know it you must have the Holy Ghost.

3. Know that in order to know it you must put forth effort on your part. In other words, you have to ask and work for the answer.

I just love loving knowing that there’s always more to know. No matter what I know about the gospel, or mothering, or breastfeeding, or attachment parenting, or gardening, or NFP, or homeschooling, or ANYTHING, there’s always something more to know. Always another unit in the tessellation.  For some reason it makes me feel safe and happy. I guess it’s like knowing that God has an eternal treasure chest that will constantly flow with beautiful, wonderful treasures. It’s my choice whether or not I am humble enough to receive them.

Payback Time: My Wonderful Son

The past few weeks I’ve been dealt some bad news all around: friends and family making bad choices, some devastating news about two close family members, and more. It’s enough to make me want to tune out the world and just go read in a corner while eating chocolates. But I keep engaging in the fight for freedom and family. I am focusing on the good things. I got to go to Leslie Householder’s Profitable Author seminar last Saturday and hear Marnie Pehrson speak on Friday. More on that later!

And all last week my son, Valor, shined at his various activities. The photo above is him after he and his teammates won the Freedom Bowl. They had to answer questions about the founding of our nation and the Declaration of Independence. This is the fifth year in a row that some child from our family has won first place! The dynasty continues! My daughter Virtue, having won first place for three years, decided she’s ready to move on and my older son is at college so he couldn’t compete.

Valor was asked to speak in stake conference two Sundays ago. He did an excellent job. More than one person has said that he was the best speaker. I loved the talk because for the first time I heard from his lips that he has received personal revelation that the Book of Mormon is true. He spoke about how youth can receive personal revelation. He shared the stories of Joan of Arc, Joseph Smith, and then from his own life.

Here he is getting his Civil War sword from his mentor, Sister Hansen, at the parents’ award night for our Commonwealth School, at the completion of his Sword of Freedom project for LEMI.

He also got a cool kepi. It is so heartwarming to see him rise to the occasion and do all the hard work he was assigned to do to earn his sword and kepi. These classes with other youth his age, and the awards, really motivate him to  do scholar work. He has read some inspiring books about America’s founding the war between the states. He has memorized the Declaration of Independence and the Gettysburg Address. It’s been so fun to see him work hard!

Pro-Vaccine Immunologist Admits a Shocking Truth About Vaccines: they are for Profit, Not Health

I Finally Get the Grinch

When I was young and even through most of my adult years, the story of the Grinch Who Stole Christmas bothered me. I liked to watch it, just because it was an animated cartoon, and back then anything that was animated attracted me. After all, I belong to the generation that had the once a quarter Peanuts specials and Saturday morning cartoons, and that was it, because we didn’t have cable. (Until I was in jr. high.)

But the part about the Whos in Whoville being happy even after all their Christmas decorations and presents and food got “Grinched” made me feel mad and guilty. I mean, I would be mad if someone stole all my Christmas goods. I also felt guilty that the Whos weren’t mad about it and didn’t get revenge. I would be mad if I were them. When I saw them standing in a circle singing happily on Christmas morning with all their loot taken I just wanted to cry, partly in shame because I didn’t feel like being good like they were. I felt like beating up the Grinch! I wanted to smack his mean nasty face! Or at least pinch him!  Actually I would chicken out on that, but I felt like at least sneaking into the Grinch’s place during the night and getting all the stuff back.

But now I “get” it.

I’ve had different people in my life demonstrate to me how important the birth of the Savior is. That because of that gift, and just that gift, Christmas is a Merry time. That truly, the gift of the Savior is such a HUGE gift. Anything else is icing on the cake. If we didn’t have that gift, nothing else would matter.

Material things are definitely important, don’t get me wrong. I belong to a church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) that teaches that temporal well-being goes hand-in-had with eternal well-being. But temporal, material things can come and go. I am learning to not be so attached to material things. If my heart is right and I maintain my connection to Heavenly Father through obedience to his laws and the promptings He gives me, I will have the material things I need in the moments when I truly need them, according to His idea. If I don’t have that thing, then I must not truly need it in that moment. There must be some lesson to be learned about not having that thing. I am thinking of Joseph Smith in Liberty Jail and how at one time he didn’t even have a blanket or a pillow. Yet he was not forsaken. He had what he needed, according to God. He learned the lessons God had for him and moved on to better material circumstances.

I have learned that I can enjoy material things and then let go of them and pass them on to others when I can sense that others need them. I am getting better at passing them onto other people who need them more, before I can even enjoy them.  If someone steals them, that person must think he/she needs it more than I do. That attitude helped me when I found out my nice bicycle got stolen from my garage when we lived in Provo. Now that I am an adult I realize that whatever shows up on Christmas morning can show up on any other morning if I obey the success principles required to attract that material blessing to my life.

I can see now that the Whos must have known all that. I don’t know if Dr. Seuss was Christian, but I like to think that he was and that the Whos were and they believed and were supremely grateful for the gift of Jesus. They knew that no matter what material things the Grinch could take away, he couldn’t take away the gift of an eternal Savior. Because of the Savior they had bodies and minds and energy and they could just go and work and attract all that material stuff back. That is certainly cause to be merry at any time!

It was five years ago this Christmas season that I read Leslie Householder’s book, Hidden Treasures: Heaven’s Astonishing Help with Your Money Matters. It helped me see that I have the power within me to attract all the material things I want, according to God’s universal laws.

In sacrament meeting last Sunday we sang the hymn that has the words that go like this about the Savior, “although in agony he hung, no murmuring words escaped his tongue.” Each of us has this has our spiritual legacy. Each of us have the person who this describes as our Savior. He is a source of infinite peace and love. No matter what the mean guys did to him, they couldn’t take away his happiness or peace. Just like the Grinch couldn’t take away happiness and peace from the Whos.

I feel such a peace now that the whole Grinch thing is resolved in my heart.

Do I Really Need to Eat a Lot of Vegetables?

Perhaps, you, like me have thought that eating right means having a diet that is 70% vegetables, especially raw,  or some such outrageous ratio that makes your  jaws sore from chewing but your spirit and appetite still not satisfied. I’m happy to propose that that might not be correct. If you have a New Year’s goal of eating better, consider this. Dr. Weston Price, a dentist, studied nutrition. Here is his letter to his nieces and nephews  I have copied this from http://www.ericsons.net/207/weston-price-letter-to-nieces–nephews , along with their editorial notes at the bottom.

It’s definitely something to think about. I will condense the whole thing into a few sentences: eat LOTS of butter and or coconut oil with all of your veggies and bread and other carbs,  and cod liver oil every day. Don’t be afraid to eat a little bit of meat either and some eggs. Have some raw milk, sour cream, whipping cream, and cheese. Don’t be afraid of saturated fat. Eat some bone broth. All of these things will allow your body to have Activator X, which Dr. Price compares to a substance that not only gives you fuel for your body, like gas gives a car fuel, but will give you the nutrients you need to renew itself, as if a car could make itself a new coat of paint.  You will feel better and be healthier.

My Dear Nieces and Nephews:

I am deeply interested not only in your health individually, but in the efficiency and welfare of your families. It is particularly important in these times of industrial and financial stress, that children shall not suffer defects which may mark and handicap them for their entire life. Fortunately, an adequately defensive nutritional program can be provided without much expense and indeed often more cheaply than the commonly selected foods. There will be no necessity for any child of yours to develop dental caries or tooth decay if the simple procedures that I am outlining shall be adequately carried out…

There are two ways in which I could make suggestions relative to the mineral and vitamin problem in the selection of food, the one on the basis of detailing a special menu for each day, which is very unsatisfactory, and the other would be in the form of general principles which should control and guide you in selecting the foods which will meet the body’s daily needs. I would suggest the latter and the following is an outline of the principles involved.

If you will think of an automobile into which you would have the choice of putting two kinds of gasoline, one that would furnish only power, corresponding with ordinary gasoline, and the other capable of making new tires grow as fast as the old ones are worn out, continually putting on a new coat of paint and even making an Austin grow into a Pierce-Arrow, there is no doubt as to which gasoline you would use, even though there would be a great deal of difference in the price. This very closely represents the condition that obtains in our bodies.

We have a sense of hunger which expresses itself as appetite and we eat until this is satisfied, but this only applies to that part of our food which produces power and heat. We have almost no sense of hunger for the minerals and other chemicals and vitamins that are needed for building new and repairing old tissues. Modern civilization is making a tragic mistake in getting away from the natural foods that are low in energy and high in minerals and increasing the intake of the heat and energy producing foods. This energy can be quantitatively expressed by the amount of oxygen that may be utilized when modern foods are burning either by the wet process within our bodies or by the dry process in special apparatus. We speak of this in terms of calories.

Most people need from 2,000 to 3,000 calories a day, according to the nature of their physical activities. Similarly, we need two grams of phosphorus and one and one-half grams of calcium a day in our food in order to keep up the body’s daily requirements. Our problem, then, is to get enough of the minerals and vitamins without exceeding our limit in calories. Our bodies call a halt usually when they have taken in enough calories to satisfy the appetite but at the same time they probably have not obtained enough of the minerals and vitamins sufficient for the daily requirement. Cereals, milk and sea foods are the foods that nature had provided us with in natural form that will satisfy our hunger and will at the same time take care of our body’s requirements. Modern civilization has modified this by providing us with menus that tend to be too high in calories and too low in mineral content.

Out next great problem is to keep the battery of our car charged sufficiently so that we will utilize the fuel efficiently. The vitamins provide the battery charge for animals including humans. One of our greatest struggles is to get sufficient vitamins, particularly the fat-soluble vitamins. There is a great tendency toward trying to supply these with synthetic products which are not a substitute. The amount of minerals that are in the food that we eat, that will be utilized by the body, will be largely determined by these activating substances. We may apply these principles to the daily diet.

It is not wise to fill the limited space with foods that are not doing our bodies any particular good. You would be interested to know that while you would have to eat 7 1/2 pounds of potatoes or 11 pounds of beets or 9 1/2 pounds of carrots to get the daily phosphorus requirement, all of which would provide too high a number of calories, you would obtain as much phosphorus from 1 pound of lentils. This would also provide the calcium. You would also supply the entire day’s requirement of minerals from 0.8 pounds of fish or 0.6 pounds of cheese. [Raw] milk is one of the best, if not the best single food, since you obtain the minerals rapidly in proportion to the calories. The main thing is to get the daily phosphorus and calcium requirements and sufficient of the vitamins, particularly fat-soluble vitamins.

There is a misapprehension regarding the value of fruits as food. Of course, fruits are desirable as an adjunct, but most of them are very low in minerals. You would, for example, have to eat 37 pounds of apples a day or 26 pounds of oranges to get your two grams of phosphorus and when these fruits are sweetened into jams or jellies, you would have to eat 32 pounds of orange marmalade a day, which would provide 33,000 calories; few of us could take care of more than 3000 calories. You would also have to take over 30,000 calories of honey to get your two grams of phosphorus, for which you would need to eat 28 pounds per day. Similarly, you would have to eat 34 pounds of maple syrup which would provide 85,000 calories. Among the poorest foods we could feed children would be white bread and jam or pancakes with maple syrup or similar combinations, and these are no better for adults than they are for children, for we all have the same problems except that the stress is greater during periods of rapid growth.

The basic foods should be the entire grains such as whole wheat, rye or oats, whole wheat and rye breads, wheat and oat cereals, oat-cake, dairy products, including milk and cheese, which should be used liberally, and marine foods. All marine or sea foods, both fresh and salt water, are high in minerals and constitute one of the very best foods you could eat. Canned fish such as sardines, tuna or salmon are all excellent; also the fresh seafood such as oysters, halibut, haddock, etc. The protein requirement can be provided each day in one egg or a piece of meat equivalent to the bulk of one egg a day. The meals can be amply modified and varied with vegetables, raw and cooked, the best of the cooked vegetables being lentils used as a soup. The cooked vegetables are cauliflower, brussels sprouts, asparagus tips and celery. Lettuce is the best of the raw vegetables.

Cut down on [refined] starches and sugars. Sweet things satisfy the hunger and provide calories and thus not only displace foods higher in minerals, but reduce the total amount of food eaten by satisfying the appetite. Reduce all white flour products and pastries to a minimum. One of the best sources of minerals is provided in cheese. Use freshly cracked wheat for cereal, muffins or bread. Much of the value of the wheat germ is lost by oxidation if the product is not fresh.

There are only a few foods that would give you your fat-soluble vitamins. These are the fish products, including practically all fresh water and salt water foods, milk, cheese and butter made from cows that have been on a rapidly growing green young wheat, either fresh or stored grass, particularly butter made in June. This is much richer than butter made during other seasons of the year. Eat butter chiefly for its vitamin content.

One of your greatest difficulties will be to provide the children and yourselves with sufficient fat-soluble activators and vitamins. We being mammals, have bodies prepared to get these from milk and its butterfat, which is not in skimmed milk. There is not much left for the children when the cream has been taken from the milk for the parents’ coffee. Where possible, have June butter stored for winter use. Cod-liver oil can be given in moderate doses without injury and to great advantage. Seldom, however, should a child be given more than a teaspoonful a day for extended periods, because of toxic effects that often develop. It is better to take cod-liver oil with the meal rather than before or after, as it aids in the utilization of the minerals in the food.

We are now able to determine from a chemical analysis of an individual’s saliva whether or not tooth decay would be likely to be present in that particular mouth. Remember, it is the defensive chemicals that must be present in the saliva to prevent tooth decay and these are provided to the saliva by having the food amply high in minerals and fat-soluble vitamins. The saliva furnishes the greatly needed minerals which aid in the digestive process; hence the great advantage in having the food in a physical form to require chewing, which makes the saliva flow. Do not let the children wash their food down with their drink. They should drink about a quart of milk a day, preferably after each meal or part of it between meals.

An excellent program then will be to use a cooked cereal made from freshly cracked wheat or oats, this to be eaten with cream or milk and a limited amount of sugar sufficient to flavor the cereal. Have them follow this with one or two glasses of milk. Recently baked whole wheat muffins made from freshly cracked wheat and spread liberally with a high vitamin butter are excellent in both their mineral and vitamin content. These can be eaten to advantage with cooked applesauce or other cooked fruits not too highly sweetened. The highly sweetened marmalades and jams check the appetite and make a disproportion of the calories to the minerals and vitamins. There is no objection to having the children fill up on bulky foods such as potatoes and vegetables, if the daily mineral and vitamin requirements have been satisfied first. If June butter cannot be obtained, which is usually the case for most of the year, and unless arrangement can be made for having some put in storage for winter use, it will be well to reinforce the diet with a little cod-liver oil during the winter months.

In my studies of growing children in other countries as well as in this country, in every instance where they were eating foods that were found to be high in minerals and vitamins, there was no tooth decay and in every instance where modern foods high in calories and low in minerals were used, rampant tooth decay was prevalent. Remember that it would take three large loaves of white bread a day to provide our requirements for phosphorus, but this would give us 10,000 calories, an amount which it would be physically impossible to utilize. Eating this with skimmed milk would be one of the surest ways to produce dental caries and in some cases might even produce convulsions. The safety valve of the primitive people has been the impossibility of their getting hold of any foods that were high in calories and low in minerals, but my studies have indicated that they break down and develop dental caries as readily as any other people when they go on modern diets.

Practical demonstrations of the way this program works out will shortly be available in a series of article which I have provided for one of our journals, The Dental Digest. These articles will emphasize that tooth decay is a symptom and not a disease. It is evidence of faulty nutrition and not, as so many have thought, entirely the result of the lack of mouth care. Mouth care is, of course, desirable. Preventive diets usually cost less, besides preventing the expense of repair of the teeth.
These are times when these practical problems should be and must be considered carefully. I hope I have not seemed to be lecturing to you. I love you all dearly and am deeply concerned for your best welfare.

Editor’s Note (from ericsons.net): Weston Price probably wrote this in 1934, after his research of isolated Swiss villagers and Gaelic islanders, but before he had visited groups whose diets were higher in animal products, such as the Eskimos and Africans. He therefore placed more emphasis on grains than he might have later in his career. Remember also that he is writing during the Depression, when meat was expensive. Many people today find that they do very poorly on a high grain diet.

We must also point out that today’s commercially available milk is a vastly inferior product to the milk readily available to his nieces and nephews in Canada and the Midwest. If we wish to obtain the same health benefits from dairy products as did the primitive Swiss, we must make a special effort to seek out high quality milk products such as biodynamic yoghurt, traditionally made cheeses and raw milk from pasture-fed cows. The challenge of supplying sufficient fat-soluble activators remains.

Note Price’s emphasis on the importance of phosphorus in the diet, when the modern thought warns against foods like meat and eggs because they supply “too much phosphorus” and are hence “too acid-forming.” Price found primitive diets rich in phosphorus, principally from animal foods and whole grains.

The phosphorus in whole grains is bound up in phytic acid, which will block minerals unless properly neutralized by sprouting, soaking, sour leavening or long slow cooking, all of which were practiced by primitive societies. Discovery of phytic acid did not occur until a few years later, and Price did not observe how grains were prepared among the Gaelic and Swiss; hence his ignorance of these techniques.

Price’s endorsement of sugar over maple syrup for oatmeal is puzzling. We recommend mineral-rich maple syrup or other natural sweeteners in preference to white sugar—always in moderation, of course.
