A Song for All Hallow’s Day and the Day of the Dead: Ancestors’ Plea

It finally feels consistently like fall! We’ve been having drizzly rain off and on all weekend. I’m enjoying the official/seasonal reason to snuggle inside with a cup of hot carob or herbal tea, a good book, and my twinkle lights blinking softly around my front room window. In addition to it finally feeling like fall, today is All Hallow’s Day or All Saints’ Day. It’s a day to celebrate the good people, saints, who have gone before us. I’m not Catholic, I’m a Latter-day Saint Christian. I love learning about the lives of holy people, saints, Catholic and non-Catholic ones, who have lived throughout history and done so much to share the light of Jesus Christ. These are Catholics, these are Reformers, and heroes like Corrie ten Boom and Dietrich Boenhoffer. Here is a great explanation of All Saints’ Day and its connection to Halloween. As a Christian, I don’t celebrate or embrace the spooky aspect of Halloween. I never let my kids go trick or treating after the oldest was 3, (one of them did it sneakily once with his friends and got in trouble), and I don’t like giving out candy. I give out non-edible treats, along with a message about Christ. This is what Jennifer Flanders over here calls seeing Halloween as an opportunity to be a missionary for Christ.

If you haven’t ever watched the series Fires of Faith, I highly recommend you watch The Fires of Faith series over here at byutv.org to see the stories of some of these saints. Martin Luther is highlighted. It was just yesterday, October 31, that many people celebrated Reformation Day, the anniversary of Martin Luther posting his 95 theses on the door of the Wittenberg Chapel. You can watch Luther’s story in Episode 1.

Then tomorrow is the Day of the Dead, commonly celebrated in Mexico. It’s a time to celebrate deceased ancestors. So in honor of today and tomorrow that involve valiant people who have passed on ahead, I’m sharing these videos below.

This video above tells the story of Rob Ferguson. See the summary story in the very top photo above. The video tells you all the details behind that experience.

Then here is the song “Ancestors’ Plea” that Rob and Tia talk about in the video above. Watch below. You will see both Rob and Tia in the video each with a spouse, as well as Bekah Sorenson, who fleshed out Rob’s song. The other people are Bekah’s spouse and Rob’s family.

You can learn more of the backstory behind the arrangement of the music in the video below.

Go here to get the sheet music and then you can play the song yourself and sing along. May this music inspire you to connect to your ancestors and bless them with temple work.
