10/14/21 Tree of Life Mama’s Story of the Day: Composers as Angels

Picture

This story is so amazing! It will knock your socks off! It’s about dead composers who visited a woman, named Rosemary Brown, as angels to dictate to her their unfinished symphonies. We’re talking Beethoven, Liszt, Mendelssohn, and more. She had lengthy conversations with them, she claims. You’ll find the story in a podcast episode by Marlene Peterson. I’ve always loved Marlene’s podcast, but this one takes the cake! Go here to listen! It’s very inspiring! I listened to it after hearing some bad news. It totally eased my pain.

Here’s where you can find a digital copy of Rosemary’s book.

10/7/21 Tree of Life Mama’s Story of the Day: Other Treasure in Salem

The House of Seven Gables in Salem, Massachusetts

For this week’s Come Follow Jesus scripture readings, I have a story for you about treasure! It relates to the story behind the revelation given to Joseph Smith in Doctrine and Covenants 111. The story is that Joseph Smith went to Salem, Massachusetts, in hopes of finding a bag of money, secret treasure, left in an abandoned house. According to this story, by Kim Burningham, a man named Burgess had told him about it. Joseph hoped to use it pay off the debt that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had created when building the Kirtland Temple. (Note: After I wrote this, a week later, I found a video with Hank Smith and John Bytheway interviewing Dr. Elizabeth Kuehn, a scholar who has thoroughly studied this time period. She says that this story about a man named Burgess is not a story to rely on, as it was told decades after it supposedly happened. Watch the videos below. At the 07:33 mark Dr. Kuehn talks about the story behind Jonathon Burgess and seeking treasure in Salem, Massachusetts. Then at the 37:42 mark she says that there are no existing sources to understand completely the reasoning behind the trip. So now I’m saying I don’t know who told Joseph about any treasure.)

Alas, when Joseph and his friends got there, they couldn’t find the treasure. So Joseph talked to God about that and Section 111 is God answering him. God basically told him, “Don’t worry about not finding the treasure. I have other treasures for you in this town. Don’t worry about the debt.” Then comes one of my most favorite scriptures, “Therefore, be ye as wise as serpents and yet without sin; and I will order all things for your good, as fast as ye are able to receive them. Amen.” (D&C 111:11)

I love that promise! If we are as wise as serpents, yet without sin, then we are promised a blessing that we will have “all things for our good.” ALL things! What are these things dependent on? “Our ability to receive them.” If we increase our capacity to receive good things, we will receive them. It’s up to us. That capacity involves becoming as wise as serpents, without sin.

I also love that Joseph was told, “I have much treasure in this city for you, for the benefit of Zion, and many people in this city, whom I will gather out in due time for the benefit of Zion, through your instrumentality.” (D&C 111:2.)

Back to the story I linked above. It’s here. It’s about a man who prepared to teach this section for Sunday School. He thought he would skip over this section to get to the other ones that were part of the lesson. He considered Section 111 to be an “insignificant scripture” at first. Later in the week he revisited the scripture and decided to study it more. After much study, he found out that part of the “treasure” that came out of this city Salem was his ancestor, Nathaniel Ashby. Nathaniel heard the gospel preached by Erastus Snow, who visited the town years later after Joseph was there. The Ashby family got baptized, moved to Nauvoo, and then to Utah. The Ashbys were some of the treasures, gathered out in due time, for the benefit of Zion.

It just makes me wonder “When have I expected a blessing, like treasure, and then not found it, but were rewarded by a treasure of a different kind?”

If you haven’t found your expected treasure yet, don’t give up hope, your treasure will come in a different way, in God’s due time. I have seen it happen in my own life. I know it happens.

Cheesy Beef and Bacon Casserole

This is a variation of the recipe over here. It is so yum and fabulous for fall and winter dinners. It is full of squash, which might put off some family members. So leave the word “squash” out of the title and make sure you use “bacon and beef” in the title.

It definitely counts as low-carb and keto and a THM-S recipe.

Ingredients:

8 c non-starchy veggies. In the above picture I used yellow squash. I scooped out the seeds and then chopped the rest into matchstick pieces. You could also use zucchini or cabbage or spaghetti squash

2 c sour cream

1 pack bacon

1 T garlic powder

1 T mineral salt

1/2 t black pepper

3 c grated sharp cheese

2 lbs ground beef

1 chopped onion

I have an abundance of summer squash this year so this is what I’ve done to enjoy it. It’s a great way to use your graden harvest!

Directions:

Grease a casserole dish, bigger than 9 x 13. I’m not sure if this will even fit a 9 x 13 pan, maybe, you’ll have to experiment, but you are forewarned that it might not. The cousin of this casserole, over here does have 8 c of non-starchy veggies, and it fits, but that version has less sour cream. Anyway, get your bacon baking in the oven according to the package directions. Chop up the onions, toss into a pan to cook on low with the ground beef. While that’s cooking, slice the squash in half and scoop out the seeds. Then cut into matchsticks. When beef and onions are thoroughly cooked through, drain fat off (unless you have grassfed-beef, because the toxins of beef store in the fat) then mix the beef onion mixture in with all the other ingredients (except for bacon) in a big mixing bowl, then spread evenly in the casserole dish. After bacon is cooked and cooled, chop into small pieces and sprinkle on top. Sprinkle Italian seasoning and more salt and pepper on top. Bake covered at 350 degrees for one hour until golden brown. Alternatively, saute the squash until soft before assembling the casserole.

This serves a family of 6 with plenty for leftovers!

9/30/21 Tree of Life Mama’s Story for the Day: A Promised Blessing for Attending the Temple by Cheri Evans

San Antonio Temple Photo Credit: churchofjesuschrist.org

This week in the Come Follow Jesus scripture reading assignment, I am reading about the dedication of the Kirtland Temple. One of the discussion questions is “How does He (Jesus) manifest himself to you in the temple?”

Here’s a beautiful story about how Jesus manifested Himself in the life of the Chad and Cheri Evans family. You can read the story here. Sister Evans, the author of the story, tells how they received many blessings from Jesus after following the words of a member of her stake presidency, “I promise you that if you attend the temple, every part of your life will be blessed.” Sister Evans wondered how that promise could possibly be fulfilled but she acted in faith anyway, despite the challenges of going to the temple when she had three small children.

The Evans family was blessed with friendship of a man who was a quadriplegic, Brother Max Para. They met this man outside the temple after Brother and Sister Evans and Brother Para had been inside the temple. Everyone was now leaving to go home. That chance encounter blossomed into an enduring friendship. The Evans family served him, and his bright optimistic smile and attitude served them. They were blessed in many ways because they befriended him. Sister Evans said one of the chief blessings from this friendship was gratitude. Seeing Brother Para faithfully serve in the temple frequently took away all their excuses for not attending the temple frequently themselves.

Overall, Sister Evans said she was a transformed woman. She was blessed to become more of who Jesus wants her to become because of her increased temple attendance, mainly because she met Brother Para.

I love this story so much! Yes, Jesus often manifests himself in the temple in the form of a friend. I also love this story because it shows how a family with young children can attend the temple without getting a babysitter. Sister Evans and her husband came up with an ingenious method, what they call the “pizza and play” method. Instead of leaving their children with a babysitter, they traveled as a family to the temple. One parent would go inside, and then the other parent would take the kids out for pizza. (If you can’t afford that you could just pack food you would eat anyway and then find a playground to go have a picnic.) Then the parents would switch places and the other would go into the temple to do the work while the other parent tended the children while walking around the temple grounds, talking about its beauty. What a great idea! I wish I had thought of this when I was a young mom.

If you want to learn more about the dedication of the temple, and the many amazing blessings involved in that dedication, I highly recommend the video below by my husband’s cousin, Lynne Hilton Wilson. A few people saw Jesus, many saw angels, and some spoke in tongues.

9/29/21 Tree of Life Mama’s Story of the Day: After 400 Names, Jesus Manifest Himself in the St. George Temple to a Young Man in the Form of Healing

Photo Credit of St. George Temple: churchofjesuschrist.org

This week in the Come Follow Jesus scripture reading assignment, I am reading about the dedication of the Kirtland Temple. It’s amazing that God poured out so many blessings upon the heads of the early Latter-day Saints. Many people saw angels. Many felt an outpouring of the Holy Spirit akin to the day of Pentecost. Moses, Elijah, and Elias came to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery and conferred upon them specific keys of the priesthood. It was a beautiful, glorious, amazing time. It’s easy to think “Wow, that’s cool, I wish dramatic stuff like that happened now.”

One of the discussion questions for the assignment is “How has He manifested Himself to you in the temple?” When I considered that question, I thought about my own life. I thought about stories I have read. None of what I considered is as dramatic as what happened at Kirtland, nevertheless, they are important and tender experiences, too personal to share here.

We don’t have to see Jesus in the temple to feel that He is manifesting Himself to us. Sometimes He manifests Himself in the form of bringing into our life a new friend who we meet at the temple, or even an old friend. Someone to bless us with a much needed blessing. Sometimes we are blessed with certain thoughts, feelings and/or answers to help us on our journey. Sometimes, we might be healed. Such is the case with my story for today. It’s a dramatic healing! The story is called “After Four Hundred Names” and it’s by Jon B. Fish. It’s about a young boy who received a healing for a fresh wound after being baptized as proxy for 400 names. Go here to read the whole story. It’s wonderful! It just makes me wonder, what blessings might we receive, personal to each of us, after doing such dedicated work in the house of the Lord? It’s time to renew our focus on temple service and find out!

9/16/21 Tree of Life Mama’s Story of the Day: “Rain, a Bedspread, and a Birthday” by Gay Galt

Today, 28 years ago, I became a biological mother by giving birth to my first child. So happy birthday to my oldest son! Providentially, my story for today has to do with a birthday, and also with a principle from the scriptures we are reading for Come, Follow Jesus this week. The lesson is here. The principle for today is “I am a steward over earthly blessings.” It comes from these scriptures: Doctrine and Covenants 104:11–18, 78–83.

Just like the day my son was born, this story takes place on a drizzling rainy gray day. I love this story because it shows the principle of being a steward of earthly materials in action. The woman telling the story, Gay Galt, felt inspired to give of her time and things to help an older married couple in need. I’m so impressed that even though Sister Galt said she had a lot of things to do that day, she put them aside to follow the prompting of the Holy Spirit to stop and give a frail older gentleman a ride. Then she followed the promptings to give things from her own home, knowing that God had a better use for them. As a result, she totally made two people’s day, week, month, maybe even year. She truly demonstrates in this story what it means to be God’s steward over His blessings. How did she know it was one of her recipient’s birthday? She didn’t, but the Spirit did. You can read the whole story here.

If you want more faith-in -Jesus-Christ-and-His-gospel promoting stories, get my ebook. It’s over here. Use it for family devotionals, or just to tell stories around the dinner table or for your family worship hour on Sundays. The first part is an introduction of the why and how of family devotionals, then starting on p. 55, you can find links to songs, scriptures, and stories to go with monthly topics and seasonal themes.

9/15/21 Tree of Life Mama’s Podcast of the Week: the Sherlock Holmes of Health on Wise Traditions Podcast #318

I loved this podcast because it shows the possibility of living to old age and still having vitality! The guest being interviewed, Dr. Mary Ruddick, tells of visiting tribes in Africa and seeing people past 100 years old hopping and dancing. Here are the shownotes for the podcast, copied from YouTube:

“There are still people on the earth in perfect health–who don’t know what a headache is, who don’t experience insomnia, period pain, depression, or anxiety. Dr. Mary Ruddick is traveling the globe to find them and learn from their traditional health ways, to see how we might apply the protective mechanisms to our own health. Today, Mary tells stories related to her travels throughout Africa, the Blue Zones, and remote regions of the world. She discusses her observations, both from traditions kept and others, lost. She also tells her own health journey and how the work of WAPF and the GAPS diet helped her recover after years of being bedridden. Finally she tells us about a project she is putting into place to help children stick close to their ancestral diets.

Easy Freezer Jam

3 c fruit, chopped or processed to desired consistency

1/2 c honey or other sweetener

2 T lemon juice

pinch of mineral salt, or to taste

1/2 to 1 1/2 t glucomannan

It’s that time of year! Fresh fruit abounds, at least in my neck of the woods. Here’s one way to save it to enjoy it later. Process the chopped fruit in a blender or food processor to desired consistency for your jam. Some people like a totally pureed fruit with no identifiable fruit pieces. I guess technically if you puree it all the way you will have jelly. Anyway, ff you have trouble blending, add enough water to allow the machine to process the fruit. Pour processed fruit into pot. Add the rest of the ingredients except for glucomannan and bring to boil. After it boils, add the glucomannan and whisk in thoroughly to avoid clumping. Turn to low setting and let simmer for 15 minutes. Pour into container and put in fridge if you are going to use within a week, or freezer if you will use later than a week from the time of making.
